And a dreadful thing from the cliff did spring,
And its wild bark thill’d around—
Its eyes had the glow of the fires below—
‘Twas the form of the Spectre Hound!

Powers and Abilities

  • Darksight
  • Death Feeding – The barghest gains 1d6 hit points for each living, non-barghest creature larger than a medium-sized dog that dies within 90 feet of it. Any hit points exceeding the barghest’s normal maximum fade after 7 days.
  • Fauna Form – as the spell, at will. Into: a white cat, a black raven, a grey rabbit, a man, a goblin. The man and goblin forms will always appear as the same man/goblin for each barghest.
  • Pass Without Trace – as the spell, at will
  • Immunity – poison, disease, level draining, aging, death effects/spells.
  • Weakness: silver weapons

Description: Barghests, in their true form, are monstrous black dogs with gleaming teeth, razor-sharp claws, and fiery eyes. Cunning tricksters, they haunt battlefields, execution sites, and other places steeped in death, driven by an insatiable hunger for demise. They lure the unwary into traps or perilous situations, hoping their victims will perish close enough to sate their grim appetite. When barghests feed to the point that their hit points surpass their natural limit, they grow lethargic and seek a place to rest. As a result, those encountered in the wild typically have their standard, unenhanced hit point total.
